The iTSS course will proving a safe and fun environment in order to

  • introduce swimmers with prior experience of open water swimming to sea swimming
  • give swimmers the confidence to swim in the sea
  • coach and support people who have entered swim events, challenges or other sporting activities which include a swim component.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is designed to be flexible for all levels of swimming competency and experience, and will be adapted to suit the needs of you the swimmer(s) and your future events or challenges.

The course will be teaching you about:

Water entry, acclimatisation and confidence practices
Breathing
Basic stoke work, adjusting for different environment
Open water skills – Sighting, drafting, turning round buoys
Pacing
Entries and exits, swim starts for events
Longer distance swims, appropriate for the level of participants

All sea swimming will be kayak supported, and led by the SYS Dorset team of Cate Read and Rob Pollard.

Meet and greet at the SYS ‘shack’ [Bowleaze Cove, Bowleaze, Weymouth, Dorset, DT3 6PW]

To the beach

  • First coaching session:
  • Introduction to sea swimming basics
  • Flushing suits/acclimatisation/confidence practices
  • Breathing
  • Basic stroke work

BREAK – refreshments in the shack and warm up

Second coaching session:

• Drills
• Sighting/drafting/turning
• Entries/exits/swim starts (depending on group)

LUNCH – Not provided. There is a café on the site and you are welcome to bring a picnic.

Longer swim along Weymouth Bay. 2 or 3km as an out and back swim.

Accommodation is NOT included in the course fees.  Here are some recommended places to stay near to the swim venue:

Whitehorse Campsite – http://www.whitehorsecampsite.co.uk/ This is a very basic campsite but in a beautiful location, It would be nice for us to camp together here and we could run a BBQ on Saturday evening.

Eweleaze Farm Camping – http://eweleaze.co.uk/ Another basic campsite in a lovely location.

There is YHA on Portland which also has space for tents.

EQUIPMENT YOU’LL NEED

Swimmers can choose to swim with or without a wetsuit, although it is worth bearing in mind that we will be spending quite a lot of time in the water and even well acclimatized swimmers might get cold.

Goggles, plus spare.
Spare hats
Towel(s)
Plenty of warm, dry clothes, including a woolly hat.
Body glide/babyoil gel
Crocs/flip flops
Tow float
Sun cream and lip balm
Mouthwash (the sea can leave a nasty taste after being in for a while)
